i have a revG 2 channel dual,and just picked up these tubes.tungsol 12ax7,tungsol 12ax7goldpin,jj ecc83s-x2,jj ecc803s goldpin,sovtek 12ax7lps and a mullard 12ax7(i think its a reissue)
where would you suggest they be placed in the pre amp?
i play 7 strings with emgs in Bb and drop A.
my style is a mix of nevermore and fear factory, but i am not chasing either bands tone.
just trying to get the best high gain/tightest tone i can with what i have.theres nothing wrong with the sound i have now ,just looking to improve it and was able to pick up these tubes.at the moment i have
v1 svetlana 12ax7
v2 eh 12ax7
v3+4 ruby 12ax7hg
v5 gt ecc83.
i have JJ gz34s and play in tube rec and swap between bold and spongy depending on my mood.
suggestions?

i have a tung-sol goldpin in V1 and i really like it. i have to EH gold pins in V2 and V3 but i think its causing a little problem in V3 because its better to put a chinese tube in that position. something to keep in mind

Don't use any of the Russian tubes in V3 or V4 unless you're certain they are OK with the high cathode voltage - that includes the Tung-Sols and the Mullard, if they're reissues. There's another thread here with a report of possible problems with JJs in these positions too, so you may be best sticking with the Rubys if they're the only Chinese tubes you have.

GZ34s work fine in the Rectifier, but you get significantly less sag than you do with 5U4s - somewhere between the 5U4 and the Silicon Diode settings. This actually helps in Spongy mode because the plate voltage doesn't fall so far so the tubes are biased less overly cold than they are normally.

hmmm interesting.
i have the rubys in v3 and 4 now and will leave them there.they are chinese so should not be an issue.
i should add that it came stock with mesa russian 2s in all positions?

V1 Tung Sol RI
V2 Mullard
V3 JJ ECC83S
V4 JJ ECC83S
V5 Sovtek LPS

Ive never had a prob with JJs in 3&4. Also the LPS's can handle V3&4 duties as well. Actually I think the LPS sounds great in all five postions in both of the REV G's i owned. But stay away from the Tung Sol, EH, Mullards, other sovteks and most russian tubes in the 3 & 4 position.

I've used JJ's exclusively in all preamp slots in my 2 channel Rectos for about 5-6 years with no issues or noise. JJ's are my ideal tubes for the Recto preamp slots.

In my 2 Channel I use a combination of EH and Shuguang Silver Dragons. Never liked JJ's in much of anything.
