Anyone put in some 5751's in place of the pre-amp 12AX7's? I know this is quite common for home audio equipment to get a warmer and smoother tone. The 5750's also break up earlier so this might also be desirable for home use.

Thanks.

I did on my Fender to get that SRV's vibe, but not on my LSS. If you stay with the same tube brand, like Mesa or GT, ..., you'll see a little drop in volume, provided that all settings are the same when you A/B them. Tone wise I didn't notice anything different. People said that you should get a little more clean 'headroom' since the tube has lower gain. I does sound a tad cleaner but when I turn up the gain to get the same volume as the ax7, tone is the same to me. When I sub in an even lower gain tube like AT7 or AU7, the amp becomes wimpy and thin.
If anyone knows what 'clean headroom' exactly is, please educate me.
