The schematics describe them like this:

V1 - input and tone
V2a - 3rd triode (rhythm) or 5th triode (after v3, lead)
V2b - reverb mix
V3 - lead overdrive tube
V4 - main outs

It sounds like V1 and V3 affect the tone the most. Should I worry much about V2 and V4? Currently I've got Tung Sol's in V1-V3 and an old Sovtec in V4. I've got 2 JJ ECC83's in my power amp's input stage that I could swap into the Studio if anyone would recommend doing so.

The only thing to remember is to use whatever is specified. I don't think it is a good idea to use a 12aX7 in a reverb driver socket designed for a 12AT7. I am pretty sure socket 2? is the reverb socket on the Pre. ( An NOS Mullard CV4024/12AT7 is a great 12AT7, or maybe a JAN-Philips 12AT7WC for that position) I usually replace the other 4 tubes (12ax7's) "by ear", I'll swap them out from socket to socket until I like what I hear.

Actually V5 is reverb, I just omitted it from my list because it was irrelevant. V2 is an AX7 as that's what's printed on the pcb for that slot, and V5 is indeed an AT7.

I am curious about what "Main outs" means for V4. Is that the output jacks...? (I am no technician.)

I believe so, I actually called MB and asked them some of these questions, they sent me a schematic I can try and dig up and send to you, it might help.
