so, my buddy is moving home, and is having an 80's party.
needless to say, we're rocking out a ton 80's tunes (metallica, anthrax, twisted sister, kiss, etc etc).
can you help me get a lead tone?
I have a ~'03 3ch Triple rectifier. I've got my clean and rhythm covered, but i am still admittedly a noob. I have a maxon OD808 to push the front end with, run mesa stock 6l6's, bold, silicon diode.
anyone wanna help a brotha out?

I'm kind of at the same place you are at right now... But for lead I start out my all of my EQ at 12 o'clock and then fine tune from there. A guy at Boogie also told me that for leads he prefers it to be on spongy, but granted you can't be switching the bold/spongy switch back and forth every time you do a lead I would leave it on bold.

tobytheplatypus,

If you want the Triple Rectifier to sound like it belongs on any 80's song, whether for rhythm or lead, you'll need to set it to Spongy and Tube Rectification and leave it there, period. You'll also need to use Channel 2 Vintage, not Channel 3 Modern, or you'll sound both too fizzy and too boomy for any 80's song. Definitely use the Maxon OD808 for leads....in fact, you could frankly leave it on all the time and it would be even closer to the tones of the 80's. As for your tone control knobs, set bass and treble however you like, but whatever you do, do not scoop out all the mids by dialing back on the mid control....never less than 12 o'clock bare minimum.

I'll warn you it's an uphill battle at best. You're trying to get a Triple Rectifier to sound almost like its tonal opposite, a souped-up 80's Marshall. The Rectos were created in the early 90's specifically as an alternative to that sound, so to try and get one to sound like what Randall worked so successfully to get away from isn't easy, and a lot of the bells and whistles on the Recto that we like so much nowadays are exactly the wrong way to do things if you want to sound like the tone Randall created the Rectos to escape from.

I'm using the red channel for rythm and both channels are vintage mode.

Spongy
Tube
bass 2
mid 10:30
treb 1:30
pres 3:30
gain 2

These are all o'clock settings.
For leads I use the orange channel
Spongy
Tube
bass 2
mid 11
treb 1
pres off
gain 3.

Then I have a mxr Zakk Wylde overdrive as a little added colour with the settings :

output 50%
tone 50 %
gain 0

I use active pickups so the overdrive is really not that important on the lead channel but works wonders for the rythm in tightening things up.
When I use it on the lead channel it's really over the top but can be fun in producing overtones and with it turned on it's becomes like a diet version of the modern setting.

Hope this helps

sorry, im not really going for an '80's tone per'se, i just meant that we'll be playing a bunch of songs with solos, and i've never really actually pursued a lead tone before.
but thanks for all your help folks, i'll be givin' 'er diesel tonight.

any suggestions on how to set the od808?

Yup. With the mid control on your Recto at 12 noon or higher, set the tone control on the OD808 between 10:00 and 2:00 to taste. Set the output volume at or near 100%. Set the gain anywhere between 0% to 50%, depending on how much extra compression and sustain you want for leads.
