Okay, having 'killed' the jj's in my triaxis I am now looking to get a new set...so in the absence of decent tube stocks here in the UK I am getting my sister inlaw (based in NY) to bring me some over and I'm wondering should it be 6 MESA SPAX7 or dougs preamp set???...I know Timbre Wolf has given me lots of Idea's but sourcing these nos tubes is a pain in the ass!! (and soooomany...) I'm thinking keep it mesa as I was happy with their tubes years ago

Thoughts please as I need to get 'em ordered

Cheers Chaps!!

Mesa is now using the 12ax7s from JJs :?: , but as of yet not the power tubes :D .
Some say xxx is the best tube others say yyy is . I don't argue , my opinion is
JJ has the very best 6V6 tubes period . Other than that most tubes are better than jj.s .
I will let the others pipe in for your situation as N.O.S sylvania's are still my favorite 6L6
and mesa sells the siemens EL34 for $150.00 a pair , " my favorite EL34 siemens EL34 are another weaker tube
I can save a few bucks buying them from others but if you get a case of 100 , you might have
60 good reliable tubes , so pay a bit more mesa loves to wack them and throw away the failures .
The JJ preamp was the tube I had the most failure with ever . Mesa tests and pounds
them so they are probably getting 20-30 tubes per 100 that pass but I am sure they would
be reliable from mesa .

Just went on eBay.UK to see what could be gotten there for your benefit and noticed some nice auctions for vintage used ecc83's. Saw some Mullard longplates that would work great for less than I would pay in the USA...Those are nice sounding and even when low testing sound great, especially after they have had 10-15 minutes running in circuit. Used VOS tubes are not all that expensive compared to NOS. I have lots and they sound great! Not that difficult to source. Plenty of very nice ecc83's there.

Have not used the harma valves from watford. I have used Russian valves identical to their harma el84's, though. I know they are the same because I was hanging out in my friend's amp repair shop and saw some with the harma label. The Russian valves are made by panno, called 6p14p-ev. Built for military use, 5000 hour rated, beefy fat tone from those, especially dirty. Have them in my Maverick. Have not used their preamp tubes and won't. Too spendy for what I can get on ebay for half the money.
