So I noticed at rehearsal that the clean setting on Ch1 of my Tremoverb is much louder than when I switch it over down to Vintage Hi Gain.

I didn't compare the same behavior on CH2.

I want to think there's probably a tube somewhere that need replacement but wanted to check in with the consensus first.

From the user's manual. Shows how much I hate to read.

It is normal to hear a volume difference when switching between clean and variable high gain.

Yes, but it's the Vintage High Gain that's louder, not the Clean...

Could the switch be turned round so it's upside down, or wired wrongly somehow? It can't be a tube because all the tubes are used in all the modes, all the time.

It can't be that because the tone is much cleaner when I flip to the Clean mode. But to be clear I have the gain cranked up really high (at about 4 or 5 o'clock).

Could it be that Clean setting is bypassing Gain completely? If so why would it be louder?

I never usually have mine that far up in the clean mode, I'll have to check it... but it does sound like it may be normal. The clean mode doesn't bypass any of the gain stages, but it does preset a lot of changes in the signal path, including lowering the input level and setting the final level higher, so it may well do what you're finding if you have it set like that. This is apparently why the modes aren't footswitchable - not without doing it via the channel cloning anyway, which gives you another set of controls - since the level changes are too big for it to work well.

Well I use both channels in high gain mode and channel switch to the lead channel for leads/solos etc. So both of them are driven hard. But a few tunes in our set need some more clean tones, so at rehearsal at least I switch over to clean. But the level is much higher.

If yours has the same behavior then clearly it's intended. I guess I need to either roll back the guitar volume or find a slightly different setting to be able to get a cleaner tone.

Just got round to checking this, and yes - when the gain is above halfway, the Clean mode is louder than the Vintage High-Gain, and when you have it all the way up it's really a lot louder.

Running the Clean that far up as a more of a low-gain overdrive channel throws up some new sounds I hadn't really explored before - very cool, thank you! I would normally use the Blues mode for that, but the Clean channel is different, more ragged and edgy... it sounds like it's not really meant to do that, but in a good way :).
