Im thinking about checking in my Mesa Boogie head as luggage at the airport. I know I will have to pay extra because of the weight, but my main concern is the protection of the head. Do you suggest I buy an ATA case for it or just use the original box/packaging from Mesa and put the box in a large bag?

Buy a flight case for it . They are extremely rough with luggage . You may want to take the tubes out and pack them in some packing material .
