I'm taking a cultural anthropology class. The assignment was to come up with a question about modern culture or practice and see how the culture of the people affect their choices. My group choose to see how advertising, marketing and endorsements effect how people go about making their purchases. I was wondering of some of you wouldn't mind taking a few moments to answer this for me. Thanks.

Primary influences: Too many to name

Level of experience: (Amateur) (Semi-Professional) (Professional)
I assume Professional are those making a living playing music; Semi-Professional: those that get gig here and there, that's me.

Music stores most visited: More Music, Sylvan Music (both in Santa Cruz); Guitar Showcase (San Jose), Gelb Music (Redwood City)

Current Amplifier: Fender Princeton SF; MESA Mark IIB 300 Colosseum; Trem-o-Verb; Studio .22+; Maverick; Allen 5F1+, Allen 5FCA; Allen Brown Sugar;

Planned amplifier purchases in the future: Allen Old Flame; other amp kits (Brown Note, Metro, and others)

Amplifier you would like to purchase: Dumble, but not so sure; Even if I won the lotto, I still would not purchase an overprice amp.

Where do you learn about amplifiers (i.e. Advertisements, Endorsements, Product Reviews): Product Review (Magazines)

What artists influence your choice: Too many to state:

How do advertising affect your choices and options: A bit, but if its sounds like an over hype guitar amp then I'm turn offed.

Please rate the following amplifiers and companies in order of preference:
Bogner - don't know, never played one
Bugera Amps - don't know, I kinda don't like Behringer gear.
Carvin - 4, they're excellent for the price, they have mass production down to a science like Peavey
Crate - other than Class A models, not too fond of the others
Diezel - Germany answer to MESA's Dual Rectifier
Dr. Z - 5 excellent, price friendly for a boutique amplifier.
Dumble - 5 for Larry Carlton's, Robbin Ford's tone; You get Santana's tone with today's MESAs (Dual Rectifier, Road King, Mark IV)
Fender - 5 Tweeds, Blackface, and some silver Face; 4 for reissues, the rest of the models don't interest me.
Framus - never played one
Fuchs - i heard they make a good copy of a Dumble. But then I hear in the TGF forum that they put down other competitors. Not sure how validate that is.
Hiwatt - 5 Nothing sounds like Hiwatt's with Fanes that clang bell tone.
Hughes & Kettner - never played one
Krank Amplification 1 2 3 4 5 - never played one
Line 6 - I'm not into modeling amps. They record well though.
Marshall - other than JTM-45, Plexi, and Super Leads, I have no interest in the other models.
Matchless - two founders of the company left the company. Rather have Bad Cat.
Mesa/Boogie - 5, has enough models to provide begineers to professionals
Peavey - Classic 30 is the only Peavey that interest me.
Savage - never played one
Soldano 5, SLO is a classic and has that mystique
Tech 21 - never played one but I heard excellent solid state amp.
VHT - 5 I've always liked VHT amps.
VOX - only an AC15 and AC30 interest me.

I gave my presentation this week and I feel I did well. I haven't gotten my grade yet, but I'd like to thank those of you who took the time to fill out the survey. Intersetingly, I got about 30 replies and Hiwatt was the highest rated with soldano, marshall, and fender filling out the top. Surprises were Dumble rated real low, which I had not expected. Mesa was in the upper middle area above deizel and framus.

Thanks again.

Cool, all this time I thought you were fooling us just polling which amp will be your next purchase. Just kidding.

I like Boogies playing live because of channel switching and they're really versatile without or less compromise compared to say modeling amps.

When it comes to British sound, Hiwatts are my favorite. I just saw video live performance of The Who's and Peter Townsend was playing his SG playing through a stack of Hiwatt. He has this thick bell like tone but not much preamp overdrive more like fat power tube distortion and I think this was coming from his Hiwatts and Fanes speakers.

No surprise with Soldano, mystique tone, expensive but lifetime warranty, and transferable between owners. Hi satisfied customers. Talking to studio engineer and he said the Automic 15 was one of his favorite studio amps.

Marshall and Fender has so many different amp full-filling every corner of the market for customers.

Well founder Howard Dumble is a strange person. Probably deserve the low rating. With Two Rock, Brown Note and other making comparable alternative amps, only the "privilege" ones own them.
Some lawyer / attornery or doctor will probably flame me about Dumble amps but their occupation tells you they're the only ones and those with that type of salary that could afford a Dumble.

End of Rant or partying shot.
