Def give it a whirl. I think I keep mine just past the normal marker on the + side. I have to look. It's a choking point between the pre and power amp when you are at bedroom volume with lower fx loop volume. As you crank the master volume, you could use that fx volume as another master and get more saturation from the el34s, but at the expense of your hearing.

Despite this, It's a pretty easy amp to live with at home and on stage. Between gigs and rehearsals, I bring my head home with me and it sits on a semi-opened back 2x12. But there will be a compromise in tones between all 3 scenarios. This applies to single channel amps, as well. It's inescapable with a tube amp.
