when you put the spkr mute on does it hurt the amp to not have a cab hooked up on a nomad 100 head (i don't quite have the cab yet! :( )?
 
No, it doesn't hurt the amp. I've found that, as with most recording outs, the sound needs some serious EQing or a speaker emulator to sound anything like the original amp. It essentially bypasses the entire power section of the amp (according to the owner's manual).

BTW, I'd be running that thing in the 50w mode too!
