Hey. I'm running a DR (rev g) through a Marshall 1960a w/ Celestion G12-65s; it sounds brutal. The cabinet runs at 16oms, and I want to match it up with another 16ohm cab. At first I was just looking for another 412 to match it with, and then I got the idea that it might sound cool if the second cab I bought had either 10 or 15" speakers.. like a 2x15 or a 4x10, maybe even a 2x12. Any suggestions? I play metal/grunge. I'm always a half step down, in Eb, and enjoy played in tunings that get as low as Bb. Any opinions?

Thanks,
-Adam

Marshall 1936 cab? The 75's have less bottom end than the 65's, or so I've heard and may complement the tone. The smaller marshall cab is probably helping your sound stay tighter. Tuning down pretty low, might be a good idea to keep that concept and the 1936 cab is wired for 16ohm. I think the 1960a will fit on top of it too. They usually go for $300-350 usd in pretty good shape used.

I've read very mixed reviews on the G12T-75s. It seems like a love/hate type deal. I've never played through them, so I can't give my opinion.. I was thinking more along the lines of greenbacks or G12Hs, maybe even the Eminence Legend GB12s, which are greenback clones. It seems like Mesa thinks that the Vintage 30s are the best for DRs, seeing how every Mesa cabinet has them.

I don't down tune that much, just for certain songs. 90% of the time I'm a 1/2 step down, switching from standard and drop D; technically Db.

I dislike G12-75's, they're very scooped sounding so pairing one with a Rectifier wouldn't be ideal (for my tastes anyway).

You are correct on the love/hate deal. I mentioned them because a lot of people like mixing the 75's with other speakers. That was a recent recommendation I got and Avatar also recommends it. Personally I do not like a cab loaded with 75's and I prefer a crunchy mid range. Even though I no longer have a Dual, I tune way down. Sometimes all the way down to Drop B and anywhere in between. Think Mastodon, COC, Machine Head, Sabbath, SOAD, Perfect Circle, and Slipknot. I've been finding my 4x12 oversized can get a little woofy.

What I would watch and look for further guidance from other members is using a 2x12 loaded with Greenbacks. I'm not sure what happens when two cabs are running and how the wattage effects each cab. 2 Greenbacks are only 50w and your Dual is 100w. Hate to see you blow speakers.

When you pair up two cabs, the power is dispersed evenly by the amp. How it knows to do that is another question entirely, and I'm no mechanical engineer!

So far, all of the advise has pointed towards another cab with 12" speakers, instead of mixing it up, i.e. adding a 2x15 or 4x10 to my 4x12. Has anyone played a DR through 8", 10" or 15" speakers? or combined sizes?

Thanks,
-Adam

If you want to hear what a Recto sounds like with 75's, check out Nevermore's "Dead Heart in a Dead World" album. The whole album was a 2 Channel Dual Recto through a Marshall 4X12 with 75's and tuned in Bb:
