Speaker to try

I bought one of the 3/4 closed back single 12" extension cabs with the 90-watt Black Shadow to go with my Mark III, and am using that with my LSC. I got a gift certificate to a local music store, and I really don't need anything ('cept for strings). So I was thinking about maybe trying other speakers out.

We play mostly Blues and classic rock. Anybody have a suggestion on a speaker I should experiment with? Since I've never tried other speakers out, do they typically install easily, or do I have to drill new holes in the cabinet?

I doubt that that store will have anything that will surpass the C-90. The C-90 is a very good speaker with the LSC. The speakers I've heard that would do it justice (from this board) are the EVM, some EVM knock off's from WGS(djw has one), Weber California(another EV knock off) and the eminence Wizard, another EV styled speaker. Most of the Celestions will not improve the sound, just give a different take on it.

This re-affirms my love for V30, great appreciation for EV and lust for green backs ... but again I say WOW - this is the best speaker shootout I've ever seen.

Hey -- late to the party here, but I'll chime in... I've done some speaker experimentation with my LSC and my current favorite is the WGS Blackhawk HP. It's Alnico and is rated for 100 watts, so it's a good match for the amp esp. if you're using it by itself. I really, really like it. Smooth and creamy, warm but not dark, handles cleans and dirts beautifully. In my experience with it in a few different band configurations it cuts very well, and maintains a full rich tone in the process. Great for classic rock and R&B. Expensive, though it's less than a Celestion Gold or Blue. I have it loaded in my combo now, and I feel like I can just leave it alone finally.

My other WGS favorite is the ET65, which is rated lower power-wise (65w), but is a nice match with the amp too. More sizzle, but in a good way, and has beefy lows. Should work well in that cab.

With an extension cab, it sort of depends on what you're matching it with (wait -- do you have a combo or a head?). That 3/4 cab is probably my favorite all-time cab, I need to get one one day... anyway, pretty much anything you put in there is going to sound good, I guess you just need to make sure whatever it is can handle the output of the amp decently.

I got a recommendation from Charles Reeder for the Celestion G12K85 (these days it's called the 12K100 I guess). I have not tried it, but he said it's very nice by itself -- smoother in the mids, crisp highs and lows, and happens to pair nicely with the C90.
