Ok, I am getting a Boogie SOB 100 watt head soon... I have an empty 2X10 Tremolux clone cabinet (closed back) I used to use with my DC-5 head before it was stolen. I used JBL E110-8s and it sounded killer. Now I want to plug two speakers in the empty cabinet and am trying to decide what is what. I like the Tone Tubby stuff, but it's extremely expensive. Other than the obvious, what is the big difference in tone between the Alnico and Ceramic magnet models? How about the Tone Tubby Licensed Eminence Lil Buddy? Will I be disappointed compared to the JBLs? I've used a lot of Eminence speakers for sound applications here lately and have been pleased with the bang for the buck. Any suggestions? Thanx!

Speakers are pretty subjective, but . . .

Alnicos compress a little at high volumes compared to ceramics. I have never been able to tell much difference myself, but alnicos supposedly can help the sound for clean to slightly overdriven blues, for example the original '64 Blackface Fender Super Reverb 4 x 10 amps.

Compared to JBLs, most speakers sound darker. For highly distorted sounds darker can sound good by reducing objectionable ice pick sizzle, but for clean sounds you might prefer brighter.

The great thing about Eminence is that you have lots of Patriot and Redcoat models to choose from, and can tailor your sound by speaker selection. Depending on what sort of sound you want, Weber VST makes some great sounding speakers too -- I have a couple of the C12N and C10N (Weber's old part number scheme) and like them.

I liked the JBLs and want that again... however they have been hard to come by. They are also PA speakers and I don't know what type magnet they have. Yes Eminence is a good choice... my first choice would be the Lil Buddy 10, but there are many more... Just curious.

ylo is on the money about the Webers...I highly recommend them as well. Check out his site, there's a good shootout article from Guitar Player.

Just like amps, there are many speaker choices to choose from. I've been getting a ton of Jensen speaker replacement orders...their new JET Blackbirds are outstanding!

Very nice! While I'd like to try the Alnicos... I think the ceramics are what I'm used to (i.e. JBL E-110) therefore, I'm toying with the idea of the California Ceramic high power 10... that should get me close to what I am used to. Thanx!

Anyone tried the Tone Tubby stuff? Just curious. Billy Gibbons and Carlos Santana rave about them. However, since I'm slapping speakers in a homemade cabinet, efficency and bang for the buck outweigh boutique... Thanx again!

let us know what you end up with and how they sound with you're SOB...which is a great amp in itself! Of course, let us know what you think of your SOB when you get it :D

Just pulled the trigger on a pair of California Ceramic High Power 10s... the price was right and the Weber people are great to deal with. I think it was $162. shipped to the house! The AlNiCos would have been over $300. and since the JBLs I used to use were ceramics, I think these will do what I want and am used to. When I get it all working, I'll post pix and give a review. Thanx for the suggestions! I never would have thought of Weber if it hadn't been posted here!

Yes! I put my barnyard homemade cabinet together and ****! I love the sound of the Webers with the SOB. If I can get some recordings I'll post the mp3s. Thanx to everyone for the pointer to Weber!
