The Mesa Boogie SPAX7 is the exact same tube as the 12ax7 but it tested as less microphonic than the others. This tube is used primarily in the V1 position which is usually the preamp tube closest to the input of the amplifier. The V1 position is the most crucial preamp tube for overall sound since the sound from the V1 gets amplified by the succeeding tubes. Most Mesa Boogie tube users agree that it is not beneficial to use in positions other than V1. So buy one SPAX7 for your V1 and 12AX7 tubes for the remaining preamp positions.

BTW there is a "tubes" section in this forum that has alot of information (and opinions) regarding tubes. Another interesting site is 12AX7A.com.
