Sound of the bad preamp tube?

Just wondering how does the bad preamp tube sound.
If the tube is bad can you see it?

sometimes they make a whistling sound, or a squealing sound. You can't tell they are bad by looking unless they have lost their vacuum, then the tube will appear chalky white on the inside.
