What's wrong?

Somebody make me a fair offer...

I don't want to feed the ebay monster but I need to get my money out of this at least...

You are asking a bit much considering it is without the hard to find footswitch. The only answer is to use a MIDI controller or other switcher like an Octopus, or pay Boogie 250$+ to mod the Quad to use a Mark IV foot switch (it is possible i had a conversation with Mike B about this). Or find one used on ebay. All of these require a few hundred bux.

I realize that there are Quads that have sold for $750, and that supply and demand affect the price; but ebay is not a good reference. Just cause someone bought it on ebay for $1000 bux or whatever doesn't MEAN that its worth that much. Hell, Mike B thought these were worth maybe 250$ and was surprised that people pay over $400 bux.

Price drop to $600

Tomorrow night it goes to ebay.

For the majority of people ebay does set what something is worth. No musician I know follows the blue book or whatever. That's only something shops do because they have to sell to a smaller market. Things that aren't easy to find ebay tends to be most peoples only outlet for them. This being one of those things. I've never seen one of these in any of the shops I've been to. I've only ever seen one Studio Pre in a shop and they're plentiful in comparison. For comparison then look at how often you find a Mark IV. Any major city will have at least one used Mark IV somewhere. There are two here that I know of but they haven't sold despite being significantly cheaper than ebay.(I don't remember but somewhere between 750-1000) No one knows where to find them. The shops don't have websites so the only people who know they're there are the people who go there.

I agree with cradle. There is no such thing as a set price for any used item. Every and any item is worth whatever one person is willing to pay for it. I have seen 3 quads sell on ebay for well over $650 w/o a footswitch in the past three months. They are very rare and a great item...no reason why they shouldnt go for $650. My opinion.

And as for Mike B. saying he's surprised they sell for more than $400: he has to say that. That statement alone aids in driving the price of the quads up. His statement fuels people bidding for quads because they think they can get them for $350, next thing you know theyre popping $700. That's the way it goes.

I don't know Mike B. but I know he is the legendary engineer/technician/tone guru at Mesa.

Since he works for Mesa, it is not in his best interest to say "Hey don't buy a Road King II, go buy a used Mesa Quad Preamp as it is one of the best tones the Company ever made!!!!" :p

He has to say the new stuff is better. Maybe he even believes it.

A Quad without a working switcher is worth less than a Quad with a working switcher, of course. And a Quad without a working switcher that doesn't work with the Mark IV footswitch (that I believe you can still buy from Mesa) is probably worth even less, but it is still possible to get her to work so she is still valuable.

Good luck with the auction!!!!

Bobby

Whatever. I got mine for $600. Anything more is a rip. If someone wants to pay $800 for one, I wont stop them. But for the same price you can get a Mark III combo or head. And that includes a power section.

You are lucky. I haven't seen one with a footswitch go for that low in the last 12 months or so I have been watching them.

The market was almost flooded with them spring/early summer 2007 then the just dried up. The first one I bid on was a relist that originally went for $550. I figured it would not go for much more than the second time around and then it went for $900!!!

And now I just have a Studio Preamp. :)

mike b has nothing to do with any rack gear any....thats a different dept...

I just tracked down the original owner with the original footswitch.

Would anyone buy this for $700 with the footswitch?

I have been searching for this preamp for 8 months, and I finally was able to get one at what I consider a fair price. I will say they are difficult to find, more so than the Studio Pre, but it was worth the wait and the search.

As for Mike B, I know he doesn't normally handle rack gear, but I spoke to him anyway since he's a real good guy and I had other questions for him about my Satellite. Rich is normally the guy who deals with rack gear I believe, and he would be the one to do the FU-2a mod to the amp.

Good luck with your sale. I'm sure whoever buys it won't be disappointed.
