I don't know for sure, but my earlier mark IV which I sold sounded different than my 2005 Mark IV. The newer one seemed to have more bottom end when a/b back to back with the same settings and same tubes. I even had the older one serviced and caps checked, but it sounded more mid-range voiced to me. Maybe someone with an inside may shed light on this mystery...
