I have recently joined a Church Group and play my Telecaster through a Mesa Express 5:25. I keep it on the clean channel. On the neck p/u it has a nice clean sound but once I switch to the bridge p/u it has a bit of growl. I am looking for a single channel amp that has similar sound that I can leave at the Church and not have to worry about packing in/out. While the 5:25 is fairly small and low weight, it would still be nice to just leave another amp at the Church.
I am not interested in selling my 5:25 and I would like to keep the price of the Church amp to less than $600.

I appreciate any thoughts.

Thanks,

TW

check out Blackheart. They are tube and can get some good clean sounds and some crunch sounds or check out the Epiphone valve junior.

Super Champ XD.....but put a better speaker in it. All tube, 6L6, 15 watts, under $400.

Or check out Frenzel Tube Amps. I am expecting a new 5E3 Deluxe Plus any day now!

The Valvetronix has a good variety, but they are not very reliable.

Traynor is good stuff, check out the YCV20WR. Go to affordableaudio (dot) com for the best price, 60% list plus shipping, and he's and auth'd dealer. Save up another hundred and get a YCS100 3 channel!

or you could stick in a lower gain tube such as 12at7 in the first position for your 5/25 clean for more clean headroom. A lot of very good sounding used but very strong and longer lasting vintage at7's can be had for little money.

Welp,

I just bought a Fender Blues Junior (made in USA with some upgrades) off of Ebay. We'll see how that amp works out. If it's OK, then no more toting my 5:25 amp back and forth.

Thanks for the replies.

Fender amps for cleans is always a win.

That is precisely why I bought a Vox AD50VT, and later an AD30VT........ so I could save my back and just have the Vox in one hand and the guitar in the other hand when I played at church.

But the loss of quality tone was too much, so I decided the extra labor was worth it to have the better sound. Now the Vox is on consignment, and I'm choosing between the Express and the Frenzel for playing on Sundays. I'm much happier this way, even if the work is harder for a few minutes.

i used a valve junior and a 1x12 cab at church for over a yr. then went back to my nomad, then stopped playing because it became a joke.

My Fender will be here Monday. My SO has already made her mind up I can keep my custom LSS Head & 4/10 for home/gig use and the 5:25 at Church if the Fender doesn't work out. I just hate leaving an expensive amp like the 5:25 at Church. Also, I think I may like the 5:25 better than the LSS.

Decisions, decisions,

I picked up a Hughes & Kettner Edition Tube Anniversary 20 for $450 to use at Church in place of my MKIV. It has sweet cleans, and a nice breakup if you push it. Worked great for me.

A Fender Blues Jr that is made in the USA? They make those in the USA? Not in Mexico?

Yep,

Used ones. New ones are made in Mexico. Mine is about a 96 model. We had a fill in drummer that was pretty loud. I will try one more time, the difference in the Fender and the Mesa was just too great. Having two speakers with the Mesa (which I can't have with the Fender) is another issue.

Because.......???

Man, if I couldn't leave it there without worries, then I'd have to reconsider what church I'm going to......  :?

You go to church in inner city Detroit or something?  :D

I can relate. I've been playing at a church for years. It's not so much the people that go to the church you have to worry about, it's the people that break in and steal stuff. You don't have to be inner city to be victimized by theft. The deductible at the church is higher than the replacement cost of my gear...so...I don't leave it there. Thieves know that churches have music gear so they end up getting targeted.

Good amp choice! I rented a Blues Junior a few months ago and tried it out. Great sounding little amp! I ended up buying a 5:25 head though...

I have an earlier version of the Hughes & Kettner Mongo1 has, mine's called a "Tube 20" and it has an built in attenuator, a 4/12 cab simulator balanced out to go direct to the soundboard, mine has a vintage CTS oversized horse shoe alnico magnet 12 instead of the POS Celestion rockdriver. The earlier ones like mine are going for 400-ish on ebay, and they are way more verstile than a Fender BJ, and have more verstility in their tones. After sticking in some vintage tubes, which are adjustable bias and adjustable bias balance  el84's or 7189's, and some vintage 12ax7's it makes some very sweet clean tones and Marshall-y sounding lead channel. Amps like mine with stock tubes and speakers can be had for 425 +- 50 bucks on ebay, that's not bad considering the newest version which is nearly identical goes for around 1100-ish. Great value, and besides plenty loud also a great bedroom volume amp that only has four tubes in it.

Well,

I tried the Fender BJ and it pretty much blows. It sounds thin and boxy. I will be getting another 5:25 for Church.

Thanks for all the replies,

You should check out an Egnater Rebel 20. I just played one today and I am having serious GAS.
