Have you ever heard a song and thought it sounded really similar to another one? Almost like one was inspired by the other?

I just listened to Europa by Santana and the song Tender Surrender by Steve Vai has striking similarities! Is this like... A known fact? Ha, it's interesting though. Very cool.

I understand that Vai's song is somewhat based off of Villanova Junction by Hendrix, but it shares more of the structures and instruments used in Santana's song(rock organ?).

There are some other similarities I hear in music, one of the biggest is the Brazilian Power/Progressive Metal band Angra and the Japanese Power Metal band Galneryus. Both bands have strikingly similar sections in more then one songs, I guess they feed off each others inspiration?

Oh yeah, I hear it all the time. There's always a time when I listen to the radio and say, "hey, that sounds like...." I've even done it with my own music, it's really disappointing.

Only having 12 notes, 12 keys and certain chord progressions that work, I guess music can become repetitive once and a while.

all chord progressions work, just depends on what youre trying to make.

i find "burn" and "to minutes to midnight to be two very different songs actually. i dont even think "burn" has any palm muting in the main riff like tmtm does.

I actually think the Vai song reminds me a lot more of Eric Johnson's Manhattan. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FL8aeeSTthQ

Mostly b/c of the octaves
