Has anyone seen this stuff they are selling to "paint" your tube pins? Its some goop you put on your pins, and eventually it breaks down, and you have to put more on.

This sounds like the stupidest idea I have ever heard in my life. I have urged my other guitarist to cease and desist. He doesnt seem to understand that something you smear on and eventually have to smear on again means it breaks down, and since it is in your tube sockets, it will almost guarantee some kind of residue buildup in his sockets.

It is sold to apparently increase conductivity. This soudns to me like the stupidest idea ever. Anyone want to chime in ?

I have never cleaned a tube pin in my life. If I do I want someone to come up here and kick my ass.

The guy is incorrigible. Now that he owns a tube amp he is buying tube anything. He buys gear he doesnt really need, and then retubes it, without knowing the personality of the tubes, and just assumes its "better" because he put a different tube in it than came in it.

I have tried to explain to him he needs to learn what the difference in the tubes are, not just judge them by the name silkscreened on them, and more importantly, learn what the purpose is of the socket you are putting the tube in, so you can make a wise, intelligent, and informed decision, rather than just blindly buying tubes because someone said this kind was good, and stick them in random places in his head.

Is there a good webpage out there for a beginner to read to learn what to do and not to do when it comes to tube replacement and maintenance? All I have are dealers, and he just goes hog wild with no purpose. He needs some kind of tubes for dummies link. Anyone got anything?

hi Sustain and others,

my two cents:

no need to use goop if the pins are clean and sockets are clean and in condition good enough to have normal contact with the pins. Have measured increased current draw in tubes after cleaning pins and sockets. I like Shredd6's posts here for cleaning and elsewhere in the forums. Excellent, helpful.
