Okay im at at a crossroad at the moment, i know my abbilitys with a guitar in my hand and i know i can write great riffs, but i cant determin my abilities as a singer because im not in a band yet, and i want a honest oppenion from you guys before i audition as a rythmen guitarist/singer for some band and make a fool out of myself.

Just a cover of a old sarah machaclan song , judge the singing please, its a pretty hard song to nail so its should give a good basic for what i can do vocaly http://www.netmusicians.org/files/85-Fallen.mp3

thanks

Hey, can you post the clip without the delay in the vocals? pretty good, though maybe few words out of tune

the short answer is yes you can sing.

the more detailed answer is this;

you have potential to be much better that will simply come from singing alot more and gaining confidence. it's like practicing guitar....hopefully the more you do the better you will become.

based on what I heard, I dont actually prefer the type voice you posses on music I like or buy....but that's not a slam on you as many will prefer your type of voice.....judging whether you have good pitch is very objective....judging whether i prefer your tone, style and delivery is 100% subjective.

for example....some people hate geddy lee and phil lynott and i understand why...but for whatever reason they have grown on me and i love them.

eric johnson, david gilmour and ty tabor sing in a soft beatles type of way and some of my friends cant stand it but I love it.

i love guys like lou gramm, tommy shaw, steve walsh, other people dont like those guys as much as I do.

you have one of those deeper kind of bluesy voices and at times you almost deliver your words in a "danzig" kind of way.....and I dont much like that style....but you can sing....so keep it up. dont be afraid to auudition for the band...you wont make a fool of yourself at all.

Thanks alot friend

That was a very thourghtfull and well understood comment.

It can somtimes be hard to selfjudge your own abilitys , i have only been singing for around 8-9 month , but i do it because i love it, there are different styles of singing and im not even sure i have found the one that suits me best.

But as you say it really is a case of learning by doing, and i will continue doing so.

Regards

I like your voice, have you ever been trained to breathe though? You would be surprised what you will sound like when you get a few lessons on breath technique. Your voice sounds to get a bit thin at times... and I suspect that is from lack of breath/projection.

I like the fact you don't go into falsetto...

Oh, btw, that song is fantastic...

What's with the delay / epic reverb?

You have talent as a vocalist and you can sing. I would advice voice lessons, since technique is everything to get great vocal tone and keep your voice from burning out quickly. You will also learn exercises for building accuracy, using correct english, and using the vocal apparatus correctly. A lot of problems and thin / poor tones come from improper technique. Poor 'support', improper breathing, and tension in the jaw, neck, and body can really stifle how a voice sounds and throw one's pitch off. Luckily, these are all problems that can easily be resolved with proper instruction, and will result in a much stronger singer in the long run. Voice is something that takes a lot of time to develop and you can't expect to get a decent sound fairly quickly, like with electric guitar or bass guitar. If you put the time in though, you can build something truly great.
How should I put this? You want to cultivate a personality, an identity, and an artistry with vocals. Learn how to control the tone of your voice, shape phrases, and express emotion while singing. This will make a huge difference in how you sound. I'm sure you could do great backups right now or maybe even take lead for a tune. You're a guy who sings well, but I think there is a leap between that and being a vocalist. Take my comments with a grain of salt, especially considering that there are many famous 'musicians' who can't even sing.

I think you have a good foundation; better than mine. Vocal lessons will only improve your technique and sound. I began lessons about a month ago from a young lady who has a vocal degree from Ithaca College. While the going is slow, she's showing me ways to control all aspects of the vocal mechanism that I had no idea existed! It can be a bit overwhelming at times, kinda like taking golf lessons, but I can feel my technique improving as muscles I've never controlled before become acquainted with their newfound abilities.

AWESOME.
I think many people expect vocals to 'fall under the fingers' easily like guitar. Vocal lessons are great. They really help out with cultivating a strong singing voice and I'm sure everyone knows it is hardest to find a great singer.

Hi guys

Thanks for all your advice, i allready searching for a good vocal coach, there is differently alot to gain just by just breating proberly while singing.

I just stoped smoking , that alone gave 10% :D

Yes i did use the epic diva effect ( garage band )on the chorus in the song, it just suits the song IMO.

But seriously , i think getting a good vocal coach is the the way ahead, that will also bring another very important thing , and that is confidence .

Again thanks for your words

regards

Totally. I think you have a lot of potential. You have a good ear for pitch and your singing shows it.

This 'immaturity' or tightness of sound in the voice will leave as you learn how to work the muscles correctly and stay relaxed. You'll absolutely LOVE the change as your tone matures. I look forward to hearing more from you! Great work!

A hell of a lot better than I can.

When I hit about 14/15 I could never really sing again. It really sucks, because you can hear the notes in your head but your voice won't respond to what you want it to do.

Be thankful haha.
