I have a mark IIB coliseum head with the 60/100 watt switch. However, when I switch it into 60 watt mode it doesn't seem to lose much volume and all 6 of the 6l6s keep their glow.

Does anyone know if I can pull out a pair of 6l6s to tame this beast a little?

I'm planning on downsizing to a 2x12 cab and I'm scared of damaging the speakers because this head pushes almost 300 watts rms when its driven.

The switch is what Boogie calls "half power". In the non-simulclass 180 watt models, the switch is used to change ALL SIX tubes from pentode (full pwr) to triode (half pwr). DO NOT pull any of the power tubes. Put EVM-12L's in your 2x12 and you'll be fine  .
