I am looking for a 4x12 Mesa cabinet and I was wondering if I could get some opinions on what I should be looking for as far as speaker types/specifications.

I found a 4x12 cabinet for $400.00 but it is 12 years old. It has Celestion Vintage 30s. Do you think this speaker cabinet is a good deal? Or should I look for something newer with different speakers? I've heard Celestions are the way to go. I think I've also heard of 90s (maybe not?).

To be honest, I haven't even purchased the head yet, but I am looking for a Dual or Triple Rectifier Solo head to match with the cabinet.

Thanks in advance for your help.

For about $100 more you can get something much newer. Unless you got to inspect the cab yourself, I'd opt for something newer. 30's are typically the way to go in a Mesa 4x12. Their mids will help the Rectifier stand out a bit more. C90's are made for combos as a replacement of the EV12.

I find the older cabs usually sound the best, the speakers are already broken and sound so much better. Honestly age doesnt matter, depends on how the cab was played and the condition it is in. Is it a rectifier cabinet?

What's wrong with a 12 year old cab? New doesn't always sound better.

The older 4x12 cabs with V30's (which are Celestion btw) are 280 watts, the newer ones are 240 watts. If it's in good shape go for it ! The older cabs are also heavier, they use thinner ply wood these days !! Unless you're a weakling old means better in my eyes

What ply are they using these days, it use to be 13 Ply birch.
