Maynard is definitely mailing it in compared to 10-12 years ago and their live show was always about him, the others are great musicians but there's *very* little charisma happening outside of MJK. I think that being a really part-time band that plays increasingly complicated music means that when they go on tour they have brushed up specific songs and they're playing them a certain way and that's the show. You don't just chuck something you tried during soundcheck into "The Grudge", and they probably don't all remember how to play, say, "Bottom".

In Maynard's defence, I think a lot of what motivated him to be the Tool Guy when he was younger is stuff that is harder and harder to keep going as you get older without turning into weird old dudes like Neurosis, who as much as I love are still on about the same stuff they were 15 years ago. He's obviously tried really hard over the years to come up with different kinds of outlets for a broader range of emotional expression than can really fit into Tool.

I liked Adam's sound less and less after Aenima, not sure if I can blame the Diezel for that. I think also as the songs got more complex and his style and chops developed his playing became a little less distinctive, especially with a lot of other guitarists trying to cop his sound and feel.

I had tickets to see them at Red Rocks a few weeks back and something came up that kept me from going. This thread makes me feel a bit better. I'm still bummed that I missed them though.

Damn, I am sure Red Rocks would have been awesome, but Tool fans, please take note and check out these guys:

They are touring all over the US for the next 6 weeks, and just played a huge show at Sonisphere in the UK, alongside some of the biggest names in the history of modern rock/metal!

Tell everyone you know that is into this style, as I did manage to see them play live twice last year, believe me Karnivool's live set is amongst some of the best out there!

Check out the tour dates on their Facebook page for locations and tickets!

And let them know these guys sent you, cause it's about time we got a support gig with them back home!

very talented, very sophisticated, not like tool at all really except for the dynamics and some intensity in some parts. vocals get annoying after a while (too radio-friendly: too much singing not enough yelling/screaming)

favorite track is goliath off sound awake, @ 4:11 it's totally ******* off the hook! that's as intense as it gets man!

worth checking out!

best tracks are New Day, and Deadman... epic!

check out the older stuff on myspace too, Themata is the title track from the 1st album that got them widely recognized.

Awesome band, from the most isolated city in Australia!
