Hey guys, not sure if this is the right area since yes - I am new, but I need help from the Boogie boys for this one. Lately in my area (Boston), there's been some recent activity with Mesa's popping up left and right, and I've decided that Mesa is the way I want/need to go. I've always like the Rectifier sound, but it seems I've always preferred the Duals & Triples over the Single Rectifiers, but the problem with the Dual and Triples is that I don't have A. The cash for and B. the need for since this is currently recording and bedroom playing (how much I hate that term). But there are alternatives such as a Mark, or a DC, and the F series.

I'm still considering the Single Rectifier but not as highly as I was when I first found it. I did some clip searching on Netmusicians.org and unfortunately the ever infamously compressed Youtube. It seems like anything under "Mesa Single Rectifier Metal" has a more 70's/80's hard rock vibe with the only time it sounds close to being metal would be when they let the E power chord ring out.

Right now I also have an offer on a DC-5 provided we can fix the distortion channel (not currently working) and come to a price agreement that's fair. I've read a good amount of reviews of the DC's and they say they're versatile, but not necessarily aimed at doing my style of music (metal and all its crushing subgenres) so I'd probably need either a TS-9/Maxon OD-808/Bodenhamer Bloody Murder - which I don't really want to have to do. I want my distortion from the amp, I mean isn't that the point of including it? I found a used .50 caliber for $600 down in Cape Cod so shipped probably looking at $650 which I was gonna pay for my last amp anyways so it's a good deal.

Marks are great but they seem to be a bit pricier than a used Recto, Marks around here are either IIC or III both of which go for high costs, so another one that's most likely out of question.

The F's aren't bad and they too can do metal but it seems not many people really use them and just spend the little extra money and get the next step up. The current one around here is an F-30 for $600.

I need help gentleman. Is the Single Rec really able to push a metal sound and proving that some people with them don't know how to tweak/shouldn't mislabel their clips or videos? Are the DC's more versatile and shouldn't be used for higher gain stuff like Amon Amarth, Opeth, Arch Enemy, Lamb of God etc...? Look more into the F?

Thanks for your help guys.

The preamp of the single and dual rectifiers are almost identical. The dual rectifier has some additional switching for the extra channel, but the tone shaping that happens is the same between the two amps. The biggest tone difference between the dual and single rectifier is the dual has more headroom in the power amp. Meaning you probley wouldn't tell the difference between the two volume wise if both were turned up to 11. What you'd probley hear is the single rectifier being a little flabby in the low end. That is the power amp distorting. Because the dual rectifier has a higher output capability it also has a higher headroom. It does metal just as well as the dual's and triples. You can achieve the same result by pulling two tubes from a dual rectifier.

As for pedals, most people end up putting some kind of over drive in front of their rectifiers to tighten up the low end a bit.

the single isn't going to be any quieter than the dual or triple really.

I would go for a dual or triple though for the added features and get an attenuator so you can crank the tubes to get them cooking but the volume won't be blasting.

I personally don't care for the F's much for high gain metal like the stuff you said. They are good amps but I just feel the recto's and dc's will be better for metal.

Thanks for the help guys

I ended up making a bit of a switch, and am now on the Mark team. Most likely this weekend, I'll be buying my Mesa Mark III (Blue Stripe) with 4x12 for the steal of the century. I A/B'd the Recto to the Mark's and compared what I was listening to currently and it seems more like the tightness of the Mark is my current need.

Dude No joke by a splawn..... Boogies are not built like they use to be. the splawn's all made by one guy and are built very well... way better tone than a boogie!!

how about a rectifier recording preamp?

EXACTLY what i was going to say. When you get the money and need the more power, you can then go out and buy a power amp that better suits your needs.
