Hi fellow tonechaser Tragics !

Has anyone found a 12AX7 tube for the V5 reverb position that has made a dramatic improvement over either the stock Mesa tube or the Sovtek LPS I currently have in this position?

BTW I am always interested to hear tube combinations across all pre-amp stages that you may have tried that have made significant differences to the sound of this amp.

Thanks to All.

Ah Don

I'd be very surprised if anything can make a dramatic improvement to what already is one of THE best sounding reverbs on any amp ever made.
Hard to improve on perfection but who knows - who can make this claim hehehe

I found the reverb was improved by using a lower gain tube. I went to a 12ay7 (6072a) and found it improved the reverb. I learned this from retubing my Fender Deluxe Reverb where I used a 12au7 for the reverb return.

I think the Fender fanboys might take issue with that statement...

Not me though.....

To OP...serious question here... Your query: "dramatic improvement over either the stock Mesa tube". So, what is it about the stock Mesa reverb that you're trying to improve? What aspect of the stock reverb falls short for your application? Again, I'm not dissing the perpetual quest for improved tone. But I find the Mesa reverb perfect for my application. Of course there are other reverbs that I like just as well (Fender Princeton) but they are different. So, I'm just wondering.

Besides, I'm not a tube guru and wouldn't know what to suggest even if I understood your query. But those that do could probably be more helpful if they had in mind a clearer picture of what you were looking for.

Good question. Let me throw something out here. The GE NOS 12AX7 is "known" for good reproduction of harmonic content, or so I'm told. I've got a couple of these tubes, so sometime over the holidays I'm going to try one in the V5 slot of my Express - the reverb tube. The thought is it might sweeten up the reverb tone. Then again, maybe not. However, you never know until you give it a try.
