I just put some new tubes in my TOV and got it back to stock.

It sounds quite a bit better, but I'm still not getting as much gain as I had wanted. On my modern HG channel, I've gotta have the gain up about past half-way for it to saturate as much as I want.

I play a les paul with burstbucker pups--should I really have to pull the gain up this high?

Hotter preamp tubes well help. V1 is the most important to tone / gain / feel.

If you do not have the gain all the way up (max) and are not getting enough gain I do not see how there is any problem ?

I guess there's no problem at all, but I feel like it should have more gain on tap?

At least more available before 12 'o clock. When you put it that way, though, I guess I shouldn't worry much.

What does it matter how high the knob is? If you can get the tone you want within the range of the knob, then it doesn't matter.

If you were maxing, and you still didn't have enough, then you'd have something to worry about

The new(er) TungSol 12ax7 is a very high gain tube. I tried it in my Ace and it really upped the gain noticeably.

I liked it, but just had to put my vintage Telefunken back in (sweeter tone).
But the TS was very impressive and I know a lot of the guys on this board will agree.

You may want to give it a try....
Good luck :D

I had the same problem with my Dual until the tubes burned in a bit. Takes a little longer on a Mesa but they do.
