Replacment pots. Are they special?

My reason for asking this is that I'm notoriously cheap & have a cart with Mouser for parts unrelated. I'm really just trying to avoid paying shipping on two different orders.

I've busted the shafts off a couple of pots on my Roadster. I have a schematic & I know the values. I can measure the physical dimensions of the pots.

But I've noticed something... Nobody seems to ever say "yeah. you can get some pots from mouser" when people ask about pot replacement. They always say to order them from Mesa. Are the pots some kind of special build that I'm not going to get a good match from Mouser when I try to find them? Are they an odd size with odd dimensions that will keep me from putting the knobs back on successfully? Are they made with special unobtanium wipers forged in the mines of Moria and lubricated with the tears of Dwarves or are they just an off-the-shelf ALPS with a Mesa part # stamped on them?

At the end of the day I'm fine ordering them from Mesa if they're special but if they're just plain old pots I'd like to save the shipping.
thanks!

As long as you are getting quality pots, with the same value and taper, and same shaft (length, diam, and type) I dont see why not.

I think people say to get them from mesa to take the guess work out of getting the correct pot.

+1

The folks at Mesa are awesome, if you call I bet they will verify the pot value and taper.

BTW- be sure to measure the pots when you have them out of the amp to verify their resistance.

Good luck,
Dom

Not sure if you've seen the pots from your roadster yet, but I ordered a replacement pot from Mesa a few months back, and when I received it, I noticed that the shaft seemed to have snapped in shipping. I called Mesa and learned that they purposefully trim/cut their pots to be shorter and that is how all of their modern amps are constructed. Otherwise I agree with the above, make sure measurements are the same, and I know Mesa uses 1% tolerances on their resistors and such. Not as big a deal with a potentiometer I assume. My replacement pot was like $.50, the knob was $8 or so, and shipping was $10 to Louisiana. Packed very well though.

Just buy them from Mesa. I but parts from them all the time. Their prices are no higher than anyone else's out there. Any, you know you are getting the right pot.
