My only real problem with the Recto is that it has to be pretty loud before it really hits it's stride. Unless I'm missing my mark, G12Ms have the strong mid/rolled off top end sound of V30s, but will tame the overall volume just a bit.

I'm don't really use my Recto for chugga chugga heavy metal... more of a grungy rock/sludge metal sort of sound (something along the lines of Alice in Chains meets the Melvins).

I'm actually looking for some info on this myself...

My experience has been with the Scumback G12M 25watt speak's... nice ones btw

GBs will have more high end, powerful but looser? mids and way looser low end than the V30s,
but, they run less efficiently and you will notice the volume difference.

I'm looking for a similar sound as you and I'm thinking the greens might be a great choice

Hahaha, I think I've made this post a hundred times before.
My take on it:

1) run the dual with two power tubes and one rectifier tube. Set it up _ X X _ or X _ _ X.

2) I love the G12m speakers in a 4 x 12 but for me personally, I prefer two G12ms and two v30s in an X pattern. Alternatively, I'd mix G12H speakers with v30s. The tightness of the v30s combined with the grind of the g12m equals a tone with good focus and lots of warmth. I'd also suggest running a Stilleto 4 x 12 (Previously traditional rectocab) or a Marshall.

I have two 4x12s... both currently loaded with a V30/G12T mix. It's generally been excellent (G12Ts add a lot of chunk), but the top end kind of gets to me after awhile.

I'll probably load 1 cab with V30s and 1 with G12Ms to start with, then experiment from there.

If you're looking for a better tone and slightly less volume, G12M-25s would be a very good way to go. They are certainly quieter than V30s, and have a more complex, richer tone that sounds good even when they're not being pushed as hard. They do have a bit of a loose bottom end compared to the V30s, but it doesn't become a problem unless you're really driving them hard, which it sounds like is the opposite of what you want to do.

My Tremoverb sounded so good through an old Marshall 4x12" with them in (old ones of course though) that I've considered getting a couple to put in a 2x12". At the volumes I use in the house I could run them from the Tremoverb no problem.

If you're going to pull two tubes and one rectifier, it's probably also best to reset the amp impedance to half that of the cabinet to give the correct match - it won't matter from a tube wear point of view unless you're pushing the amp hard, but it may not sound quite as good otherwise. (ie run an 8-ohm cab from the 4-ohm jack.)

This is exactly what Mesa says to do when running the amps this way! I always set the amp impedance this way because I was told 8 ohm amp output into 8 ohm cab is actually a mismatch when running the amp with two power tubes and a rectifier tube missing.

G12M's (20's and 25's) are my ALL time favorite speakers in a vintage Marshall. But I cannot see using them in a practical sense in a Rectifier. The way the Rectos are tuned with the added low end (even when you roll back the lows on the e.q.), they are much stronger in those frequencies than Marshalls and will really flub and overcompress those speakers and distort them in a very non-musical way - If you play in a band and you've got to push the volume to blend with your drummer, it'll drive you crazy. I tried it with a GB loaded 4 x 12 with my band and the results were terrible. I had to unplug that cab within minutes - the speakers just don't handle certain notes/frequencies very well.

The G12H's do a much better job, but they are also quite a different tone as well.

When running the Marshall 1960ax cab I use some common sense and turn the bass down on my head. I also remove a rectifier tube and two power tubes to run the amp at 50 watts. In addition, you can set the variac to 'spongy' to cut a bit of the thumpy frequencies. It is really a question of the tone one wants. If you want a massively thick modern tone, go with higher wattage and tight speakers like v30s. If you have a loud drummer, the high wattage high efficiency mesa cabs might be the best option.

I recorded with an Avatar cab with Greenbacks in it. I used a Solo 50 with it. Sounded rad, seemed to have a lot more mid range punch than the V30s I am using in an Avatar cab right now.
