Right now, I have the stock Mesa tubes in my pre and a set of Mesa 6L6s in my 2:100. I also have a set of JJ EL34s that came in the 2:100. Don't know which I could use. I sorta wish the 2:100 could run simul-class.

Anybody try other interesting preamp tubes in the Recto Pre?

What's the general consensus 6L6 or EL34 in the 2:100?

The JJ 6L6's IMO sound amazing. My buddies also seem to think so. EH 6L6 bass sounds like floppy cardboard. Mesa tubes 6L6's don't seem to have as wide of a frequency response in my amp. Those are the only one's i've tired thus far.

Well... I shoved the JJEL34s in the 2:100 tonight.

I broke the keyed plastic piece off one of my 6L6s. That sucked.

I realy enjoyed the EL34 sound. It's less flubby/boomy and way more growly. The whole amp runs a lot hotter. I have to adjust for feedback from extra gain.

I had intended to A/B the 6L6s and EL34s... but I broke the one. So, I'll have to get some more to do the A/B thing.

I dunno.

Can't you tube half the amp with one and the other with the other? You would be able to really get an idea that way because the delay between would be less.

+1

It would be much easier to pick out the differences.

And if you go with 6L6's you should give the SED =C= 6L6GC a listen also. I have them in my Roadster and they sound great.
I've heard good things about their EL34's as well, but never tried them myself.

I don't think the half and half idea will work. The 2:100 is fixed bias, either 6L6 or EL34. Not both.

Worse, I apparently have another issue. The "B" channel is not having the same (hardly any) volume compared to the "A" channel. I was hoping swapping the preamp tubes would help, but it didn't. Weak weak weak!!!

Worse yet... I was jammin' tonight and suddenly my whole sound took a crap. I don't know if it over heated or what...

Thankfully, I only live an hour from the Mesa factory... Still It will be pricey and I will be without my amps for a couple weeks. Lame lame lame!!!

The half and half idea may not work between 6L6's and 34's, but it would be a great way to pick out the differences between different makers of the same type tube, like Mesa vs. JJ vs. EH vs. SED etc.

Ugh... my "B" channel/right side of my power amp is toast. I dont' know what happened. It just started sounding rally bad and especially in Modern mode, then... nothing out of the "B" side. WEAK!!!

Ran the "A" side into all 4 speakers in the cab tonight. Sounded fine. no stereo goodness from the effects, but the crunch and munch was in effect with 100 watts, rather than (2) 100s.

Making the pilgramige to Petaluma this Thursday. I hope it's a quick and reletively inexpensive fix.

I have to laugh

Dude I'm in Brazil , If my triaxis or 2.90 will toast , I can't imagine what I'll do
So don't complain , you're a luck man :D

Lucky coincidence that I live as close as I do to the mother ship.

Also lucky, for the first time in a long time, I have a viable backup...

By the way, on the OP... I found there were JJ preamp tubes in the 2:100. Whoever owned it before me was into that JJ Tesla sound.

Now, it's all retubed as stock, with Mesa branded 6L6 & 12AX7. Good solid American style tubes... (made in China...)

Update...

Got the power amp back from Mesa. 100 bucks labor and $2.25 parts. "carbon scoring" and a blown screen resistor...

I am super impressed. One week turn around on the repair.

What a difference!!! I had gotten used to the amp sounding the way it did... broken. Now, it's all monster time now. I can't believe it. It's less boomy/bassy and seems just clearer and better.

I can't wait until nest band practice.
