I am wondering if there is any way to remedy the "fizzy" artifacts in the sound when i crank the gain on channels 3 & 4. Thought perhaps different preamp tubes might tame the beast.

Definately. Lots of inexpensive vintage american/european tubes out there that will tame the fizz, especially if your current tube line-up has any chinese tubes in the preamp. Those things are nothing but mush and fizz in my amp and it came with 4 of them in it.

Is it possible to pull the old preamp tubes, switch em out for new ones, then if i am not happy with the new tubes, pop the old ones back in?

Absolutely. Be sure and label where each tube was pulled from so you can put them back EXACTLY as they were.

I had a set of JJ's in my Recto and it sounded EXACTLY like a Big Muff. Turned out I had 2 bad preamp tubes. Strange.

NOS preamp tubes are the way to go for a Recto. They don't have to be the super expensive kind either. Pre-1970's JAN or old organ-radio pulls really smooth out the amp. You can also try EL34's in the power section, but the biggest difference would be the pre-amp.

Try a JJECC83 in V1. That tube tapers the high end off a little. Dont run 5 of them though as it will sound very dark. I only use it for V1.
