Hi guys,

I looked around and couldn't find an answer...and I'm sorry if it has already been answered. I recently got a 4x12 with the V30s in it...are they the same thing as the Celestion Vintage 30s? If not, are these V30s better than the vintage 30s? Why the change? thanks!

actually, the mesa ones are made in the UK, whereas other celestions are made outside the UK. Also, for many years, these speakers were rated at 70 watts each and had a bit of a "scooped" sound to them. As of about 1-2 years ago, they are 60 watts and emphasize mids a little more.

Actually I think that was a misprint on mesa's part in there catalouges, I think they are still rated at 70 watts and still made the same way.

As to the original poster, I much prefer Mesa's V30, a little more relaxed mid's which is good considering V30's are very mid spikey and they ahve better bottem end.

Hmmm...so if you order a V30 from Mesa, it's different than if you ordered directly from Celestion?

The ones Mesa are using now are 60 watts... it's not a misprint. But as far as them changing the voicing i'm not sure. the v30s were never scooped though, they always had the pronounced mid-range bark. Most people thought they were scooped when in actuallity is was most likely the amp 9probably a recto) they were playing through. At the end of the day though its the cab construction that plays the bigger role in a cab sounding scooped or dark or bright. the speaker plays its part but the overall constuction will pretty much determine the sound of the cab.

Yeah, Celestion themselves will tell you it's a proprietary design that they're not at liberty to speak about. At least they were, I haven't checked on them in a couple years.

the 70 to 60 watt difference is since years ago....marshall, maybe you´ll now this amp-builder from the UK, always labeled their cabs with 280 watts, which would mean 70 watt per V30 speaker, but celestion always printed 60 watts in its product descritption....so the question is around since the V30s were introduced in marshall cabs decades ago.

i don´t think, that there are differences between celestion vintage30s and "OEM" V30s in cabs like mesa or marshall.
personally i own both types of speakers, 2 of the "original" marshalls G12V30s and 2 of the celestion vintage30 and they all sound a bit different. which means, that even the one vintage30s from celestion sound different from the otherone.

celestion always changes materials of the speakers during the production and this can cause a bit different tones at the end.

Both Mesa and Marshall used special V30's, both voiced differently. Avatar speakers use to sell the same mesa speakers and they called them the 60L's, L meaning lower bottem end. they would say, same speakers sold to a certain amp company but they couldnt name the company.

mesa use to also tell you this that there V30's were different, but since the music change they now claim different and deny it because they want people to buy there cabs. I have also seen in print that there cabs now have 60 watt speakers, however I have seen many new cabs and they all still say 280 watts, so either almost every dealer still has old new stock, or it was a misprint in there catalouge. So if anyone has a newer mesa cab that says 240 watts please let me know, I am also getting ready to order a new cab from Mesa so I guess I will find out that way.

not true... emailed celestion about marshall vintage 30s and they replied they are EXACTLY the same speaker and marshall rate them at 70watts because they feel safe to do so.
i thought the hellatone 60s were just broken in vintage 30s?

The Hellatone 60 is a V30. I peeled the Hellatone label off and checked. :)
