I've searched the boards and can't seem to find much on the topic, terribly sorry if this is getting old but I'd like to know...

...what the major (if there are any other than volume) differences between the two sizes are. Any tonal changes? I have a 4 x 12 now and I just feel that it's too much power. or at least more power than I feel I will ever need so I was thinking of downgrading to the 2x12 and if the chance should arise in the future of needing more power I could always get a second 2 x 12 and stack them, thus getting the 4 x 12 back...what do you think?

Had the 2x12 recto, and I currently have the 4x12 recto. Cabs sounded very similar where I would say the 2x12 is a bit more bassier. I got rid of my 2x12 because I could not hear it due to the cab being very directional and low to ground. Very hard to hear in small gig situations where space was compromised due to might taller height. With the 4x12, I never had the problem because speakers are pointed at player. I would say the 2x12 vert would be the best option. Oh, and the 2x12 can provide plenty of noise for gigging purposes.

I have both. The 2x12 is a little more scooped sounding. The 4x12 has a touch more mids. It's not night and day type stuff, but it's enough to be noticeable. Beyond that, they're pretty similar.

And honestly, in terms of volume they're not that different. If you're looking for a smaller cab because a 4x12 is a pain in the ass to move then the 2x12 is a good option. However, if you're hoping for a significant volume reduction you'll probably be disappointed.

what is the diff between a 2x12 vert and horizontal cab anyway, can't you just flip either on its side??

The 2x12 vertical cab has an angled speaker on the top to point towards the player. - Pat.

If I wanted to get the 4 x 12 "back" I could just get a second 2 x 12, connect both to my dual rec and stack them, right?

theoretically yes, it will have the juice of the 4x12 but probably be bassier. The good option with getting a 2x12 is that you could, if you wanted, get an open back 2x12 to add to the recto to have a mix. Just more options. If you have the 4x12 slant, then you will probably not get the tone hitting hour face that your used to. 2 2X12s are straight and will be very directional.

Hi,

I have both cabs (oversized 4x12 and vertical 2x12).

Although I still prefer my 4x12 for its richness and more "complete" sound, honestly, for gigs, it doesn't matter that much. I bought my 2x12 for gigs and so far, I have nothing to complain about, the response is great. I'd say the 2x12 has a little less mid and less bass than my 4x12, both barely noticeable in a live/miked setup. Anyway you can compensate with EQing your amp.

I had a Mesa 2x12 and it was alright...Nothing special.

Fairly scooped and flubby with lack of detail. I bought a Port city 2x12 and i can't endorse these cabinet enough. Sounds absolutley huge for a 2x12, and is ridiculously tighter than the recto 2x12.
