It depends on what tone I'm going after. If I'm trying for a clean tone, I'll just close mic with a Shure SM57. If I'm going after a highly distorted tone, I've had good results with two combinations.
#1 - An SM57 up close, and an MXL67V large diaphram condenser placed a few feet back. Listen with headphones, and adjust to taste.
#2 - An MXL 603 pencil condenser close miced, and a Rode NT1 a few feet back.
The condensers will pick up more of the frequencies that the close mic won't. Although, I did use just the MXL603 once, and had a pretty good turnout.
