Hey y'all,

I'm recording at the moment and I'm having trouble with my Quad, not able to get the right settings. Granted I've never really played around with it as much as I should have because I just use my Revision G 95% of the time. I decided to utilise my gear as much as possible for this EP and a few occasions really call for a tone similar to this:

The band transitioned from JCM800s to Mk1 around that time so I'm not sure what they actually used to record the song. But if anyone has any sort of advice for getting a similar style of heavy rock tone, it'd be muchly appreciated.

Oh, and I'm running the Quad into the FX return on my RK1, so I have a plethora of power amp options to chose from. I also have an Orange PPC412A and a Mesa Rectifier Standard cab to chose from. Everything is being recorded with an SM57

Use Lead 1 and lead drive 4-5.

For the output masters and overall volume 5-7.

The EQ more in the classic V seting.

Use the Metallica Quad settings and work from there but less drive and lead 1.

Thanks mate. It's currently 12:40 in the AM here in Australia, so I will try in the morning. The tones I was getting were coming out like I had a crybaby, toe down the whole time. I've been using the Orange 412 to record though and I put the EQ in an ^ shape to try and bring out the real focal points of the amp so it enriches the sound spectrum when I throw 3 more guitar tracks down. I'm guessing that this was a bad idea and I shouldn't try to push the preamp's strong points (when compared to the other amps I own) because it'll naturally do that anyway.

One thing I've learnt is that it's freaking tough to record an EP all by yourself. Even with the addition of an engineer, it'd make the world of difference having some extra ears to keep me on the right track and bounce ideas off of.
