I've found that when I ran my Quad preamp into my Strat 400
I could get more than sufficient volume.
When I run the Quad into my Crown XLS 602 I can barely get enough clean power to get over the top of the band.
It's all to do with the i/p sensitivity of your power amp. For once Mesa are not bullshitting about this.
I sold my 400 (too heavy and big, & blew tubes alot) and now run my Quad into an Intersound IVP preamp/Para Eq then into the Crown. I lose stereo and a little tube warmth, but I now get full power, a global EQ and volume, a backup preamp, and two racks I can carry with one hand.
The IVP and Crown make a brilliant Bass amp as well.
Check the input sensitivity specs on any power amp you buy. The greater the sensitivity the better for .8 volt = full power is better than 2 volts = full power.
