Quad pre into Dual Recto Power Section?

Hey guys,

I'm in the market for a new poweramp. Currently running a Quad Pre and a MP1 3TM into a 20/20 poweramp.

Naturally, i've been keen to buy a 2:90 for sometime now - but i've had an opportunity to buy an older dual recto (and i AM a fan of the recto sound).

What i'm thinking now, is using the power section of the Recto for my Quad Pre and 3TM. Also giving me the option of just using the recto by itself.

Sounds cool, in theory... But my biggest concern is what the quad pre might sound like though the DR power section - will it be nearly as good as using a 2:90?

I consider myself more of a rhythm player, currently running a baritone schecter and 7 string RG...

i played the quad last week with my dual recto and my roadster poweramps, it was awesome sounding!
never had the chance to play it with a 2:90, but with my old 50/50 poweramp, which was also nice.
but with the "modern" setting on the recto, the quad blew my mind! even with the cleansounds.
i wish i could kept the quad, be i needed some money, so the quad had to go.
overall, you can´t go wrong with this combination! use a loop-system at switch between the preamps and you´ll get one of the most flexible setups.

Normally my Quad pre is plugged into a 50/50 power amp. Every now and then I'll run it through my Road King's power section and the results are incredible. Not that the 50/50 doesn't sound good, quite the opposite. It just doesn't have that modern edge that the Recto power amp has.

You can mix pre amps with power amps. So it's possible, but with a little money.

I ran my TriAxis into the power amp of my rackmount Dual Rectifier for awhile. Had to tweak a few settings, but man did it sound ballsy! If I were more of a metal player, I might consider making that my permanent setup. Less vocal/mid gain voiced than a 2:Ninety, but still a cool tone.

Hey guys, thanks for the tips - great advice. I still love the idea, but have just realised that the recto's only have a mono effects return...

Shame, cause i do have all the midi switching stuff needed for the above suggestions! (Eg. GRX4, Splitters, etc).

I guess that leaves me three options...

1. Forget the idea, and get a 2:90.
2. Buy TWO DR's!! (Not gonna happen... lol)
3. Look for another suitable head, with stereo returns.

I still want to explore this idea... so, any suggestions / recommendations for option 3? 6L6's preferable...

I've only ever seen a few heads with a stereo fx return, most of them solid state Peaveys and Fenders. There is also a Diezel head with a stereo return.

If you can handle their size and weight, the Mesa 295, 395, and Strategy power amps are amazing machines. The 295 and 395 are 95 watts per side and go for usually $100 less than a 2:90. The 395 has a Deep Extend and Half-Drive just like the 2:90.
