OK I have a Siemens in V1 (super quiet and cost $80, maybe 5781 but I forget now) and then got 2 Mullards. Put 1 in V2 and volume soared! I mean on 2 I could hardly sit in front of the amp. It was like it was on 4 and the tone was pretty good, more sizzle. I ended up with the JJ in V2 and Mullards in V3 and V4 with a Sovtek (new) in V5. Sounds killer and still a little louder than stock.
BTW I had 2 RCA 17mm and was disappointed in them but I hear short plates are better?

I may be shooting myself in the foot on this one , here goes anyway .
Yard sales . Boot sales .
Old stereo's of the tube variety .

..... Folk's put 'em by the curb .

Old tubes in a stereo do not get a third of the workout that a guitar amp inflict's upon them .
Good way to try out an old Mullard or Telefunken ....

When you see a console stereo by the curb , peek in the back .

You might just find a gold mine .

A neighbor of mine has an old electric organ in his living room. I saw behind it once and it had tubes. No idea what type, but I was really to make him an offer on the thing just to get the valves!
