Hey Y'all
I spent the day doing a musical chairs thing with the pups on my LP and my 335. I took the Fralins that were in my LP out and put in a set of WCR pups; a mixed set of Fillmore in the neck and CrossRoads in the bridge. Oh man it is incredible! What tone! Duane's tone on Stormy Monday and his tone of "Not My Cross To Bear" - got it nailed. 59 Darkburst tone for days...
Then I got really ambitious and decided to try replacing the stock 57 Classics on my 335 with the Fralin Humbuckers I just took out of the LP. Thats a little bit harder to do. After a lot of cussing and "what am i crazy?!! wonderings I finally got the output jack back in (its furthest from the F holes and pickup route and a mofo to get lined up).
I couldn't get anything out of the amp when I first fired it up, and I sat there shaking my head vowing not to take that thing apart again. Then I realized I had the wrong cable, hooked up the right one, and SHIZAM, SHIZAM, SHIZAM, there it was - that Larry Carlton sweeeeeet liquid 335 tone that I always wanted. Oh man was it worth the hassle.
So on a sense I got two new guitars today - a new Class 5 Les Paul that sounds like Duane on the Fillmore East album, and a new 335 dot neck reissue that sounds like Carlton on Josie or Kid Charlemagne. All in all a pretty good day.
I will post clips when I can crank em loud enough to record.
Joe
