there are three preset knobs (one for each channel). I wasn't able to detect what the difference is when that is engaged and you turn the knob. so is that basically simulating the V curve in GEQ and when you turn the knob it's re-shaping the curve? thx.

The preset EQ has nothing to do with the graphic EQ. As the name may suggest, it is a preset V shape EQ which cannot be altered and turning the knob clockwise adds more preset EQ to your sound. Make sure you've got the toggle switch set to "PRESET" on the channel you are playing. You should definitely hear it; I use mine on Ch3 Extreme mode and only dial it to about 9:00.

When I first got my Mark V, I thought "What a waste", but considering how you may want Ch2 EQ'd differently than Ch3, it makes the amp more versatile. And it's simple!

I think having the preset eq and the sliders are brilliant because they do sound different. On channel 3, I use the sliders for a really scooped kinda metal sound most of the time, but just flipping the EQ switch to preset gives me a very different sound on channel 3. The preset doesn't scoop the mids as much (to my ears) and it gives me a more rock'n'roll sound (for lack of a better word). I hate trying to describe this stuff with words, ugh - just try the two. I never get my preset past 1 or 2 o'clock at the most for channel 3, maybe 10 o'clock for channel 2 when I do use it there. Name another amp that gives you this much tube tonal versatility!

Just stating some other obvious things that could have been over looked. Make sure that the eq is actually engaged for the specific channel, either on or footswitch. Maybe the eq isn't engaged at all, that would explain why when you flip between preset or sliders there is no difference.

My thoughts exactly.

contour definitely works, i tried it again today. i am still dying to crank this amp (dammit). got pretty close to AJFA tone with IIC+ and EL34 + triode.

i guess I'm just more used to the sliders since I've owned a III and IV before.

Ch2 is a significant improvement over Ch2 on previous Mark series.
