I've decided to move this post...

http://forum.grailtone.com/viewtopic.php?t=15886

...to here.

I added Groove Tube el34 LS quartet to my 2ch DR and can dial the gain back a little. So far I'm liking the el34's and want to swap out my preamp section. I've tried a standard Mesa preamp load and Sovteks listed in the above post.

I'm looking for a nice rich warm compressed rectifier tone. I found the Mesa and Sovteks a little to harsh for my liking.

What I'm leaning towards (in no particular order)

Groove Tube Gold Series 12AX7C
Groove tube Silver (had these in a Rectoverb and liked them)
Ruby 12AX7CS

Thoughts? Suggestions?

Have you considered the Tung-Sol 12AX7 RI in V1? I think that with a JJ ECC83S in V2 they complement each other nicely.

Yea, I know, that's part of Doug's standard recipe but they do sound real good in my Roadster IMO.

Then again there is always NOS.

What do I put in V3-V5? Just leave my stock Mesa's? Looking at Doug's website that looks like a cheap alternative.

Sure you can. I like the Penta Chinese or a Tung-Sol in V3, and the rest (in my Roadster) are Mesa Russian 2.

I keep swapping the Mesa & a Sovtek LPS in the PI, and I really can't tell the difference between them. The JJ ECC83 feels too sterile there IMO.
