I've been looking into buying a mark iv recently, but I'm also open to a rack setup. What preamp would get me the versatility and tone of a mark iv head? Also, with what power amp should they be used?

Hi,

The Mesa Quad would be pretty close to the sound your looking for.
I would pair it with the Mesa 295 simul power amp.

Also you might want to try the Engl e570 or Egnater M4 those are killer preamps.
for Mark iv sound, I highly recommend you stick to ALL TUBE preamps.

Why not just get a short chassis and put a Mark IV into your rack?

I guess I would have to second the recommendation of Maeshuggah if you choose not to put a Mark IV in your rack. The Studio Quad and a Simul 295 are one hell of a setup.

Again, the Mark IV will readily go into your rack if you buy the short chassis version and the rackmount kit. It takes up 4 spaces. Many people have their Mark IVs like this. I don't have mine racked right now but I have the kit in case I ever go rack again.

Another suggestion is to just get a MK IV shorthead and place it on a shelf in your rack such as I do. This way it is easily removed from the rack to be used as a stand alone head, and it saves the price of the rack mount kit. If however you want a preamp I'd go with the TriAxis.
