That's one of Myles' most accessible essays. I agree completely with him about the phase inverter's role, especially in amps where the power section is taxed more. Boogies are better known for preamp overdrive, rather than power section breakup, so the phase-inverter effect can be less pronounced, depending upon one's use of the amp. I find the PI choice to be the heart of the dynamic feel of my tweed Bandmaster-inspired Richter 5E7 amp.
I do have to disagree with his blanket statement against using a 12AT7 in V1, though. I'll grant that that may be his taste, and it won't be for everyone, but I'm grateful that I formulated my own opinion before being limited by the over-stated opinion of a "tube expert" (expertise is a dangerous power). I particularly enjoy using a Mullard CV4024/12AT7WA as the primary input (which is V2, due to the Triaxis' special circuitry) in my Triaxis, and came to using it through a process of trial and error (ending with trial and success). It always pays to use one's own ears and taste.
