Power tubes in Mark IV (5881 position and EL34 tone)

Maybe I am crazy, but popping EL34 in the outside slots gave my amp and more rounded tone, not quite as spikey...that doesn’t seem normal?

My other question is for using 6l6 and 5881, should I put the 5881 on the outside or in?

Last question...I love my Mark IV, but have noticed at band and performance levels, I’m having trouble taking my brightness a bit (without using EQ, which works perfect, just wondering if there is any tube setups to help, or other suggestions). Thanks guys!

Can you elaborate a bit on what you mean by "spikey"?

I use EL34 in the outer slots of my Mark IV and love what it brings. I run in class "A" most of the time. But, sometimes I switch to simul-class to get the 6L6s in to the mix.
