Hi, I realise this is a stupid question. I have a 1973 marshall superlead i took out the power tubes but I can;t remeber the order of the 1st and 2nd. The power tubes I have are svetlana winged c el34s. So my question is how do I know which power tube goes into which socket of the amp. Anything on the power tube that would distinguish it? Any help would be appreciated, thanks

It doesn't matter.

If they are a matched quad, all four power tubes are identical and any can go in any socket. Even if they're two different matched pairs, the important bit is keeping one from each pair on each side of the power amp, so it still doesn't matter if you swap 1 & 2, or 3 & 4.

First off, the only stupid question is the one that does not get asked. If you do not know, it's better that you ask. I, among others, would hate to see something happen to you or the amp. 94Trem is correct about the match quads. Put them in any of the power tube sockets. The matched pairs work differently for getting the best sound from the amp. The way to put in matched pairs are one pair on the outside set of sockets and one pair on the inside set of sockets. Good luck!
