When and why would I buy a power conditioner? Whats the advantage over just plugging in a 4way adapter in my rack?

Just curious, Cheers!! :)

I believe it actually 'conditions' the power you're receiving thereby removing any uncertain spikes or peaks. This way you know your gear is getting exactly what it needs. Overall protection of your gear. Does it change the sound? I'm not sure. Anybody who actually has one?

I just run a power board with a surge protection built in. Not as good but better than nothing.

Basically what rdomain said, it regulated plus it lets you know if the outlet you are plugged into has sufficient power running through it or if it is a bad outlet.

it maintains a constant flow of power to ur gear, cleans the power supply to be perfect for musical gear and protects your gear from exploding, well thats wat a good one should do neway

I am asking about power conditioners. Mainly because I've never heard of 'Estabilizers'. How do they differ from power conditioners?

Cheers

Mark, I think Gordo meant regulators. 'Fatboy' is in Spain and sometimes his english is a little off. He's an awesome dude, He really knows what he's talking about. Give him an open ear, he has good ideas.

Hey guitarzan. I appreciate everyone who replies to my questions and Gordo is no different. There was definitely no patronisation intended in my reply - I meant every word with all due respect. Although, looking at it I can see how it could be taken the wrong way.

I should just shut up - we're all cool.

So...you seem to think he meant regulators when he said estabilizers?? That's cool cause I don't know what either of them are, even if they're the same thing.

I have just started on my own rack so I am looking at my options.

Cheers.

ok no problem, it´s my spanish-english.
The first thing to think is what kind of enviroment are you using???? and the next is the equipment that you want protect???
It is not the same use your equipment on your home with an alone electrical phase for you than trying to conect the equipment in the same phase than your fridge, microwave oven, washing machine, etc..... even we could think if you will use your equipment for giging, that is the worst case because pubs electrical installations are not as good as we think, even if you play on a outside gig with electric-fuel generators and you connect your equipment to this machines the effects could be very dramatic for your pocket :D
The next question to ask is if you have analog or digital equipments or maybe a mix of them.
Analog equipments are rougher than digital, so variations on the input voltage will be critical on bad design digital equipments.
After you answer that questions we can recomend you the best furman for your purposes

Mark, it's all good. I just thought I needed to clarify the post.

I am gigging in pubs.
I am currently going through a Vox Tonelab>>Marshall JMP1>>Mesa 2:90.
I haven't yet acquired a nice rack mounted effects unit. I'll probably end up with something from TC electronics but I am only just about to start researching effects processors. ( oh, and eventually a triaxis! )

I'm in Australia. I don't know if that makes a difference to which products are available or recommended.

Cheers

I am a total convert to having conditioned power (I us a Triaxis, 20/20 and a roctron xpression), and if you read this it gives a fantastic insight into both cables and earthing and, well everything including RFI, spikes the lot, and tons of stuff you might never have thought about!!!

Read all of it and be enlightened....

Thanks Tramp that was most enlightening.

Power cons are now on my list of going to buys... Just gotta find the right one now.

Cheers

Just to confuse the issue I've changed out the wire to all my units too!!.... if you buy the ones with more conductors and a 'weave' then they cancel out even more RFI......................

this type of thing is the dogs danglies....................

Kimber in the US make this stuff and it's worth it for what we pay for our rigs!!!

I've noticed a huge difference in tone and lack of noise!!

Those are some fancy shielded power cables.

About a year ago I added both a power conditioner and a voltage regulator to my rack rig and they had quite a profound effect on it's overall sound and performance. To start with I have alot of problems with line noise and inconsistant power where I live, and in addition to that I have a very powerful radio station less then two blocks from my house which bleeds moldy oldies through everything that has a speaker. The first thing I did (after much reading) was to buy a Furman-Power Factor Pro. What a great piece of gear this thing is. It cleaned up all the line noise such as humming, buzzing, crackling, power tools, air conditioners, etc., as well as the radio station. In addition the current is now smooth and steady and there's plenty of it. But it also made me aware of another problem. The LCD voltage readout on the front of the unit showed me that the voltage in my house was also very inconsistent. So I added the Furman-AR-1215 voltage regulator and now everything is perfect. I have plenty of clean stable current and my voltage is dead steady. These two units have made ALL my amps sound much better then they did before. See these two units here:
