You could send it back to EV for less than what you'll spend. I don't understand how I can recone my EV for $85USD, all inclusive. Why don't you ship the **** thing to one of us on this side of the pond and save yourself $200 or so?

That said, That does look like the right kit. Have you thought about just buying a new 12L classic (200w) from a forumite and having it shipped to you? They are like $220 USD or something.

Give it a shot .

Hell , I would . :)

I'd do a lot more research .

You can be the cone-man most awesome .

I don't trust vintage stuff that is meant to wear. Where's EV based? US? UK? India? :?

If I could avoid unnesessary tax hits and send it off for an "official recone", that would be ideal.

Problem with my country is we're not into custom stuff other than for showcase use (and those are what.. one-off family projects?). So if I googled hotrodders, re-tolexing guys, luthiers, airbrush painters and so on I'd find a private number to a saddle maker 500 miles away.

The custom scene is best in the US. You acknowledge it and have made a huge business out of it. RIP Boyd Coddington.

/drunken rant off

What do you mean "vintage stuff meant to wear"?

what kind of custom stuff are you talking about?

ElectroVoice is in Michigan, USA.

I don't trust 20 year old paper cone speakers. They stiffen up and can't the excursion like they used to. That's my opinion anyway.

By custom stuff I think of craftsmen specialising in a certain area. For example speaker reconing, luthiers, retolexing of cabinets, cabinet makers. Or choppers and hot rods for that matter. We don't have any of those listed in the yellow pages.

So vintage Jensens and Rolas aren't for you, eh? :D :D

Methinks you have it exactly backwards. A new cone will be stiffer. Paper deteriorates over time. If anything, it gets looser. Of course, I live in California (the desert), not Sweden (desert, not so much)!

Sorry but I think just the opposite is true. You know how everybody whines about "break in" for that stiff new speaker (or recone). My oldest EVM 12-L is the best sounding of all six that I have. It is a 1982 with the funky heat sink cover on the magnet that I purchased new. Do your research and check the prices of vintage jensens and JBL's with the original cones. My 82 EV seems to have a healthy coating of nicotine on the cones which has faded the color somewhat but the cone is softer and the spider is also looser. My newest 12-L is a 1992 EVM proline and all I can say is they are like fine wine, they just keep getting better. There are plenty EVM's on ebay that can be bought for about the price of a recone. It is not difficult to do a recone with the proper kit and especially the correct glues by following the directions to the letter. Who knows you could probably corner the market in your country/continent by starting a recone business. There are genuine EV recones kits and there are asian made aftermarket kits flooding the market now beware.

gts, Go to the EV website and contact them for a parts/service center near you. I know, it makes me sad too to think of a torn cone!!!!

kopro,

The EV branded EVM's in my lot have a cork gasket on the front of the frame. the Mesa oem EV's use a thick paper gasket. They were never made with rubber or foam parts between the cone and the frame. Never seen one fall apart.

Now on the other hand many older "hi-fi" stereo woofer speakers used a foam or rubber ring between the cone and the frame. Most speaker reconing services also offer "refoaming" for these high end stereo woofers as yes they do dry rot after 10 or 15 years or so. It's hard to beleive you've actually blown out an EVM 200 watt speaker but I'd check: if it has a rubber ring around the cone it's most likely it has been reconed with a kit that was intended for a stereo bass woofer and was not 200watt rated. It's really not fair to compare an EV instrument speaker with a hi-fi stereo speaker as these are two different leagues. Just google up a search for "speaker reconing service" there are many and several good ones from which you can get a lot of information.

I had mine re coned in the UK last month by a company in England who are agents for EV. They use only EV parts and even import the glue so it is true to the original. All I can say is thank goodness I didn't buy a new one as the re-cone sounds fantastic and still looks original.
