I would give the IV the nod here. It was the most innovative, origional, and complex (in tone and function) mark amp released to date. The V is one hell of an amp and I wish I could afford one but I wouldnt trade my IV for it. Ok, IIC+ crowds turn now.

I have had a Mesa Mark around all the time since 82'. I have owned a II,III and still have a IV. I was thinking about a V ... after trying it .... clean just different not better than my IV. Channel 2 is better than my IV. Lead channel not as good as II,III or IV.

If I was going to say one mark sound that is best ... you did not list it. Mark III Colosseum. Bigger transformer and 6 power tubes. Not as many good voices as my IV but I feel the lead channel sound is the best of any Mesa.

This all is just a matter of taste.

Yep, You got me on the Coliseum. That's a tough one because they were made across all the MK II & III models.

Comparatively, I don't think there are enough Coli's out there for many too folks to have tried them. I've been playing Boogies for 20+ years and I've never seen one in person!

I know of one "Down South" - Alabama to be semi exact.... maybe time for a road trip :)
Btw define "greatest"

And another even further south than that. I would have to agree the Coliseums deserve a nod. I've never heard anything like it.

Just a Mohammad Ali / Boxing reference for good measure! :)

The real question is "If I could only have one Mark it would be..." I guess I should be more specific but it's silly poll in the first place.

The Coli owners appear to have already taken issue....

Yep, pretty soon all four of them will be on my case.

I guess I could start over. But that would be an absurdly long list which will certainly result in a argument about whether I should have listed the C+ w/GEQ is he same as a C+ without the GEQ. ...and god forbid if I forget the C-.

I'm still amazed that no one has picked the V! I figured either the C+ or V guys would all pile on and take the win easily.

I really have no idea what "grestest" means?

I can not participate based on my lack of understanding...

I think it means I can't spell.

I know I can't so I guess I can vote now!

Funny thing in college I was the go to guy for proofing papers BUT I couldn't catch my own errors. Our eyes tend to fix things our fingers do.

I voted C+ for obvious reasons.... :)

Is mesa the only company that does this with amps? That is have a revision of an amp every few years (or less. or more) it seems with the rectos and Mark (actualy all there amps) there is the version 1-12 (mark 1, mark II a/b/c/c+, Mark III red/green/purple/black/blue, mark IVa/b, Mark Va (i'm assuming there will be more) and ther eis like A-F or something (i dont really know) of different recto revisions.

anyway i dont think there are many other companys that did that.. please enlighten me though..

haveing only played a V, i'll go with a IIC+ cause im a fanboy ahahhaahhaah

serisouly though how much different are all the stripe colors (not the actual color but the tone of the corresponding amps) on the III?

I think they just do revisions because doing whole other amps is to much work ...... you know coming up with new names and what not. I am going with it is because they are lazy and not much imagination.

Kind of cool the II & IV are so close.

Here is my Q ? .... anyone vote for a amp they do not own ?

That's the beauty of Mesa Boogie. Nobody else does it this way. Marshall, fender, etc.. are happy to spew out thousands of mediocre amps and wouldn't think about changing or redesigning on the fly because it would slow down production or cost to much to retool. MB still has the spirit of a small company that used to make amps to order where any improvement on the last amp was incorporated into the next. (No more evident than the Mark III dots and stripes) Due to larger production they have become more methodical with the revisions, but the spirit to constantly innovate is still there. If there is any way to improve their product the do it. A very rare thing these days.

To your second question. I'm not sure that many of the variations change the sound dramatically. Clearly the IIC+ has something special, but I've owned a mark IVa and a mark IVb and I don't think I could tell them apart blindfolded.

We need a "Name that Mark" gameshow. Grab a random Mark Series clip and see if anyone can really tell them apart by sound alone.

How would you do?

I've played most of them and I'm pretty sure I'd fail miserablely.

yessssir!!!love the Coliseum.."the ball shaker"..where are u in the south,GD-NC..North Carolina,I suppose?

Yep. I'm in NC. I'd LOVE to play a Coli sometime but 'Bama is quite a haul for me.

...and I guess "Down South" is somewhat relative. :D More a state of mind than a physical location.
