I remember it was the EV black Shadow, the celestian, and a JBL...

Did they ever come with Altecs? Or was that only the MKI?

I like a Fane 100 watt alnico in my MKIIC+ combo and a pair of Tone Tubbys in my 2x12 bubinga cab with my MKIIC+ head. But I like alinico speakers, oh well

My tone is so warm to start with that the Tone Tubbys didn't work. Those sounded like I dumped all my EQ settings! (But I am going for a Metal/Hard Rock High Gain RHYTHM tone.)
I am getting the JBL tomorrow and tonight I will try the EV that fit in my Blond IIC+. :D

this is what I ended up with, the EV was just a little too clean and "sterile", the altec 417-8H series II has a warmer tone and more compression at high volumes.

What kind/style of music do you play?

a lot of different stuff, but mostly in the classic rock and jam band type of stuff. The altec works great and is "smoother" than the EV was.

Is that the same model Altec that Santana uses? Does it have the aluminum dust cap in the cone? I know it isn't traditional but I like the sound of the Fane alnico in mine.

Interesting! How many watts is it?

I believe it's 100 watts RMS and 100 db @ 1w/1m

I believe santana uses the older version of this speaker but very similar. Yes it has an aluminum speaker cap. Nothing wrong with a fane speaker!

you can see the aluminum cap in this pic:
