The high pitched whine was most likely oscillation. It can happen at almost any frequency, often too low or too high for the human ear to detect. But it dissipates power.
The temp of the tranny is not a great indicator of anything in particular. Crane may be right that there is a short so that it dissipates less power (as heat).
Diagnosing oscillation is not easy unless you have some experience with the circuit. Especially when it's a power amp and it only happens for a short period of time.
